1. Watering- obvious but crucial if the weather is hot and dry or if rain is in short supply. However as gardeners we need to be responsible when watering to not waste and maximise our efficiencies when we do give our plants a little drink. Watering in the morning or late evening when the heat has calmed down and the sun has gone to bed can help hugely as less water is wasted (simply because in a heat wave or dry day the water evaporates quicker than the plants can take it in) and you will prevent scorching on leaves & blooms when you water outside of the hot sunshine hours.

2. Weeds need to be kept on top of, as much as you can and when you can, go and do a few minutes here and there to prevent an overwhelming amount of weeding that could catch-up with you. I have major problems with brambles and bindweed in my garden, it's a constant battle as it feels like minutes and they've taken over the garden or have started wrapping themselves around my lovely new summer blooms or fresh veggie plants like marrows. Doing small amounts often breaks the job up and keeps the naughty little weeds at bay! If they are annual weeds compost them, if they are perennials such as bind weed, nettles, dandelions or brambles chop them up and put them in your green bin (if you have one) so that they don't take root in your lovely compost and then take that over too- gardening is an ongoing battle.

3. Dead head like there's no tomorrow! Especially if the weather has actually decided that it will be summery. Any flowering plants, whether it's bedding or perennials benefit greatly from regular dead heading, it makes watering and feeding more effective as this will only be concentrated to new growth, new buds and current blooms rather than the goodness being taken in to dead heads turning into seeds and then a lack of flowering that follows. Like the watering this month, little and often is your key to success to make the job easier and not as daunting. I even suggest taking any yellowing or dead foliage off plants too, to keep watering and feeding efficient but also to prevent disease, provide plenty of healthy airflow to the base of the plant and of course to keep your displays looking top notch.

4. Go and get inspired... the best part about gardening is enjoying someone else's outdoor space and grabbing plentiful ideas for your own garden. Also take it as a gardener's holiday, enjoying the outdoors especially a well designed and cared for garden, this can be so good for mental wellbeing and can distract you from daily chores and tribulations. Of course I highly recommend spending 'breathing time' in your own garden too (as pointed out in my YouTube video that supports this blog) but if you're like me, it is too easy to start off sitting there all relaxed with a cuppa until you start thinking about weeding or 'oh I just need to plant that or stake that floppy perennial' and quickly get up to do said job etc... going to another garden either RHS, National Gardening Scheme, Private open garden, National Trust, English Heritage (and so many more) you really can relax and enjoy plants, flowers, schemes, other peoples ideas to ignite inspiration for yours without worrying or having the temptation to do any 'work'. Take time to breathe, appreciate, rest whilst still exploring your passion and give yourself some chill time outdoors.

5. Grubs up! Feeding time at the, er, garden! So another obvious not so obvious job which is often overlooked, food. Plants are like us humans, they need a little food to perk them up and give them the energy they need to get on doing their thing. Again (I seem to be very positive about British weather today!) when the weather is hot and/dry plants can suffer, running out of steam quickly which can lead to disease, damage, lack of blooms, a poor display and death of plant. Giving them a good booster once a week can really enhance your plants growth & health to keep them looking wonderful for the summer. Seaweed feeds are a good all-rounder and can really help with healthy growth, supplementing this with a high potassium feed such as tomato food for plants that you want to keep on blooming well and heavily will give them that extra boost needed for the job.
