'How to Grow a Garden' by Ellen Mary

A refreshingly easy & beautiful guide to read, wonderful illustrations which are joy to look at throughout her informative book too. From garden science basics, how to decipher Latin names, to tips & tricks that are useful for any level of gardening enthusiasts. I love that this is a book for both the novice gardener as well as being so useful for professional, or long standing gardeners. Sometimes it's great to have a little refresh on the basics, taking us all back to the roots of how to garden with ease with the best techniques stripped down and made achievable.

An easy read that's a pleasure to look and learn from scratch or refresh on areas you or your gardening chum might be rusty on. The plant science section takes me back to my days at Pershore college, a lovely reminiscent read for me whist reminding me why it is so important to know the science behind the beautiful floral displays and tasty harvests I enjoy from my own garden. This can very much help take our garden game to the next level in terms of understanding soil, nutrients & how a plant ticks. Knowing this can enable optimal plant health & happiness leading to a beautiful garden or better harvest, which intern for me, gives me a wellness boost from the achievements made after gaining or refreshing this knowledge.

Talking of wellness, Ellen also actively explores, explains and promotes the importance of gardening and plants for wellbeing which I believe can be so beneficial for so many people. This has been proven during the last few years of lockdowns. More people giving their outdoor space some love and reaping the wellness benefits. Give Ellen a follow on socials or take a look at her website where she will show how to really hook in to plants and the great outdoors to improve your wellness even more so, or giving you the tools to begin your garden for wellbeing journey.

For the heavy lifting- hands-on gardener

RHS endorsed Goldleaf Tough Touch Gloves

Is the gardener in your life always covered in scuffs, scars & gardening battle wounds from too much heavy work? Then look no further, these hard wearing yet smart gloves are not only the choice of many professional gardener's (myself included!) they are also endorsed by the RHS.

A high quality, premium glove that helps protect from the spiky nasties in the garden and helps protect hands & wrists when carrying out heavy activities such as regular digging and grabbing with the soft inner, comfy glove. Soft on the inside- tough on the outside.

I love that this particular design has longer cuffs, running up the wrist and forearm for extra protection. I always find this incredibly useful and game changing when tackling the abundance of brambles we have in our garden that I constantly have to battle with throughout the growing season.

They look smart but are super practical too, long lasting and hard-wearing. nice and comfy to wear which is always welcome especially when carrying out the horrid yet essential jobs of gardening.

Goldleaf have all sorts of beautiful designed and lovingly made quality gardening gloves that suit many different needs or gardening jobs and all are available in a good selection of sizes.

You can find the full range of Gold Leaf gloves for sale on the RHS webshop.

For the wildlife & pollinator lover

Seedball Bee Merry Gift Tin

A gorgeous stocking filler for the pollinator conscious gardener, a tin filled with wildflower varieties to entice those buzzy bees & fluttering pollinators into the garden.

Each ball is so easy to apply- simply throw into place on the surface of a garden border or compost filled planter and just let it do it's thing... tat dah! easy peasy wildflower garden for bees!

Seeball is made up of seed, clay & peat free compost- so you can be environmentally friendly too whilst encouraging the bees & wildlife in to your outdoor space which I adore. All of Seedball's tins contain 20 of these growing bombs, each ball holding 30 seeds! And because the seeds are wrapped up in a clay, peat free compost ball it prevents birds or small mammals from finding and eating the seed before it has chance to germinate, giving a higher rate of success and thus, more beautiful blooms to enjoy with ease.

Take a look at the image below from Seedball to see the wildflower varieties included in Bee Merry:

Coco and Coir Gift Certificate

Gifted from Coco and Coir- their compost selection available from their website. Image Copyright Lottie Newitt 2022©

A new product & company to me recently and I have fallen in love with them. Coco and Coir just gifted me a fabulous selection of their goodies to play with and of course talk about... watch this space, there will be growing trials on my YouTube Vlog in the spring for this!... However having had a good old chin wag with the lovely people at Coco and Coir they told me that they have just started doing gift vouchers for the festive season- how cool is that?

Ideal for anyone who loves to grow.... well anything and everything whilst keeping the environment in mind. Their eco-friendly pots are my fav, they look lovely and rustic made from coir, a by-product from the coconut industry, saving waste which I love. They are bound and held together with natural latex giving them strength to last you properly through the season (i.e. not fall apart after the first few waters like other cheap ones do!) Coco and Coir produce round and square coir based pots in a good selection of sizes suitable for all sorts of growing fun.

They gifted me a selection of their peat free composts that I can't wait to use in the spring. Lovingly packaged with loads of useful information included. I have the 75 litre packs which come as a compressed block making them easier to move about before use. You simply add the block to a big enough container, pour 25 litres of water over it and wait 20mins. The block expands to 75 litres in total, such a great way to make compost storage, lifting and use easier before and after expansion.

Coco and Coir also make and sell basket liners, mulch mats and plant supports ideal for indoor climbing plants like Monstera which look great as well as tough and durable for the job.

Also ideal for Christmas is their organic, absorbent, weather resistant, durable coir doormats. Plenty of designs to choose from including some festive printed doormats too, which I will be treating myself to this year! (Can't resist a bit of Christmas print!).

For the indoor or 'fair-weather' gardener

Plantsmith Houseplant Giftsets

Plantsmith Perfecting Houseplant Care Mist- Gifted Ad. Image Copyright Lottie Newitt 2022©

Award winning premium indoor plant care that looks stylish as well as actually delivering everything it promises in terms of feeding & plant health care.

Made up of expertly chosen, natural ingredients that will make houseplant foliage lush and roots & shoots healthy again. The packaging is eco-friendly made from a sugar cane by-product and the product itself is vegan and cruelty free.

Plantsmith's perfecting houseplant care mist works a charm! The lovely team at Plantsmith Gifted me this product and I am really enjoying using it on my indoor plants. After just a couple of weeks my Monstera leaves are looking more vibrant with new growth already emerging and my Spider plant looks stronger, not as whispy as it had been for the few months previous. My Orchids seem to have plumped their foliage up since I used it on them too. They currently have a touch of wooly aphid and I'm hoping that the Lavender and Avocado oils found in the perfecting houseplant care mist will see them off after a few more weeks of spraying.

I love the exquisite branding too, normally my houseplant feeds would be hidden away in a cupboard! However, the Plantsmith bottle is so stylish that I happily leave it on my sideboard next to my spider plant on full show.

They also have a Fortifying Houseplant Feed & Tonic which compliments the mist that I was gifted. Feeding the roots, the core of the plant with 13 essential nutrients and kelp extract ensuring your plant has strong and lush growth. The professionally formulated nutrients aid with blooming, making your indoor flower displays last longer.

Plantsmith have created a stylish selection of gift sets, pairing their products thoughtfully to give the recipient the best results possible from their combination of quality plant care products.
